San Francisco Man Giving Cyclists and City Planners Headaches

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Most everyone would agree that there are many health benefits to cycling, in fact, it is one of the main reasons people choose to cycle instead of drive or use public transportation. One man in San Francisco, however, may not agree. At least he claims he does not.

Rob Anderson, 69, is using a state legal loophole to stall the development of 1,600 miles of bike lanes in California, according to SmartPlanet.com. Anderson successfully sued San Francisco in 2006 for failing to properly conduct environmental studies before making bike lanes. The studies are required by state law. It stalled the project for three years. Needless to say, Anderson has not made many friends in the cycling community.

“The city insists on screwing up our streets on behalf of the Bicycle Coalition and a small, obnoxious minority of bike people,” claims Anderson. “It’s political correctness run amok.”

As ridiculous as Anderson’s claims are, they have been effective. Los Angeles has put a halt on its bike path plans for now. It seems the city may not have much choice, in light of the San Francisco judge’s ruling in 2006.

“The city knew there was a problem with environmental clearance,” says Los Angeles city planner Claire Bowen. “Then we looked at what was happening in San Francisco…It’s an obstacle, and you have to work with that process to look at ways to make it work. To me, it’s part of the mountain you’re climbing. But that’s the challenge.”

I think most reasonable people would hardly consider protecting cyclists—especially children—to be “political correctness run amok.” Hopefully the judicial system and legislators can coordinate to get this project done. Millions of taxpayers’ dollars were already used in studies for planning these bike lanes in Los Angeles, and Anderson is just adding to the complications.

Cyclist Receives $6 Million Settlement after Accident

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

An unnamed corporation has agreed to a lawsuit settlement with a 32-year-old man who was injured in a bicycle accident in November of 2009, according to the OC Weekly. The accident occurred at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana when an airport shuttle struck the cyclist. The name of the defendant and the plaintiff are both kept confidential due to terms of the settlement, according to John Wayne Airport.

According to reports, “a large multi-national corporation” agreed to pay the plaintiff $6 million in damages. The night of the accident, the shuttle pulled up to the airport exit and stopped. As it was pulling back onto the roadway, it hit the passing cyclist and rolled over him, fracturing his pelvis and damaging internal organs.

According to the OC Weekly, the defense argued that the cyclist was wearing dark clothing and was under the influence of marijuana and prescription medication at the time of the accident. Whatever the circumstances were, the company agreed to a large settlement.

It is important that you are visible to motorists when you ride at night. Even if the bus driver is at fault here, this accident may have been avoided had the driver seen the cyclist.

Police Search for Motorist Who Struck Young Cyclist

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

A motorist critically injured a 13-year-old girl after striking her in a hit-and-run collision on February 6, according to the Los Angeles Times. The girl was riding her bike in Santa Ana on Greenville Street when the car struck her and then took off, according to police reports. She is in the hospital, but doctors expect her to survive.

“The driver fled the scene, making no attempt to stop or check on the condition of the injured girl,” says Santa Ana Police Officer Anthony Bertagna. Several other motorists stopped to assist the young girl and called an ambulance. A potential witness, identified as a Latino man driving a black Chevrolet Suburban, left the scene as police arrived. Police are attempting to locate the man. There are no other witnesses and no vehicle description for the car who struck the cyclist.

The young girl suffered multiple fractures and internal organ injuries, but is slowly improving.

Sometimes a bicycle accident is unavoidable, but there is never an excuse for fleeing the scene. This young girl is lucky to be alive, and hopefully the authorities find this motorist quickly.
